The "Magic Invitational Tournament" was an event held by Wizards ot the Coast from 1997 to 2007. The best players were invited to duel in various formats. The winner was allowed to design a card which would be printed in a future set, once it got the R&D's green light. The winner was also depicted on the card's art.
Gemstone Caverns, designed by Tsuyoshi Fujita during the 2005 invitational tournament, won the public vote among the users on the Wizards of the Coast website.
The character on both Onslaught and Time Spiral versions of Voidmage Prodigy is Kai Budde, the winner of the 2001-2002 invitational tournament. The two illustrations represent two scenes within seconds of each other.
The character on Dark Confidant (Ravnica: City of Guilds), illustrated by Ron Spears, is Bob Maher, the winner of the 2003-2004 invitational tournament. This was the reason why this card was often called "Bob" among players.
